Alaska Airlines Closes Acquisition of Virgin America

This morning Alaska Airlines closed the acquisition of Virgin America. Starting today, Alaska Airlines will have:

  • 5 West Coast hubs (Seattle, Portland, Anchorage, San Francisco, Los Angeles)
  • 1200 flights to 118 destinations
  • Combined fleet of 286 aircraft

So what does this mean for those flying on Alaska and Virgin America?

Amazon Finally Got Me to Sign Up for a JetBlue Account

I didn’t have JetBlue account before because their route network didn’t fit my travel. Last week JetBlue announced a partnership with Amazon that made me reconsider signing up for an account. You can now earn 3 TrueBlue points for every dollar spent on Amazon. In order to earn TrueBlue points, you have to use your unique link on this JetBlue page.

8 Things I Learned From my Stay in Ghana

1. Make sure you’re up to date on all your vaccines for mosquito born illnesses and make sure to take your malaria medicine everyday

Here the thing no one tells you about mosquitos in Ghana or any place tropical for that matter. No matter how much repellant you use, you will still get bit. I used repellants with 40% DEET, ones with all natural ingredients and one from Mexico I’m pretty sure isn’t legal in the states. The result was the same, I got mosquito bites.

New Alaska and American routes; Allegiant’s Poor Safety Record

It looks like Alaska is launching a BWI-SAN route. The route is showing up on Alaska’s route map as well.

Alaska also will be updating one its Seattle to Boise flights to a 737. They usually fly a Q400 or E175 on this route.

American was granted approval to fly LAX to Beijing.

Allegiant aircraft break down in mid-air 4x as often as other airlines.  This doesn’t seems like a huge surprise given all the incidents in the past couple of years.

Off to Ghana: Day 2

I have to get into the habit of actually posting things that write.

IAD to ADD

My journey started off with a 13 hour trip to Addis Ababa which is a hub for Ethiopian Airlines. When I boarded the plane I was greeted by the purser who offered me the choice of champagne, water, or orange juice and a selection of magazines. I chose the champagne and a Time magazine. At my seat was a pillow, blanket and amenity kit. I was seated at 4J.

Off to Ghana: Day 1

I’m currently at Dulles waiting to board my flight to Addis Ababa. The checkin in process for the Ethiopian airlines was surprisingly quick and easy. I thought there might be a problem since I couldn’t checkin online. The reason I couldn’t checkin online was 2 fold. My visa for Ghana had to be confirmed and probably the biggest surprise of the day, there was an equipment change. I would be flying on 787 Dreamliner.

Frankfurt/Ecuador Trip: Day 1 SEA->SFO

Airline: Alaska

Seat: 6D

Airplane: Boeing 737

My flight to Germany is departing from SFO so I had to take a positioning fly. I took advantage of one of the many sales $69 sales Alaska has on flights to San Francisco (I’m hoping this becomes the norm once Alaska closes the Virgin American deal).

I decided to take the 1:10pm flight since the flight wouldn’t be filled with many business travelers and I would have a good chance at a upgrade. Boy was I wrong…

Hey, I like to Fly

I’m going to be traveling for 10 days, visiting 8 cities, and 7 different airports. I’ll be in Germany for Oktoberfest and also visiting Ecuador. How did this crazy trip come about?

Well I was supposed to go to Europe in August for 10 days. I booked first class travel using Alaska Airline miles. In June a great deal to fly to Frankfurt from the west coast for under $500 was too good to pass up. So I cancelled my original trip and booked this one. I was scheduled to come back to the States on 9/20 and fly back to Seattle on 9/21.

I’m Going to Ghana…How Should I Get There?

In October I’ll be traveling to Ghana to do some volunteer work. Since I have a ton of miles in a variety of accounts I have many options. My only requirement is that there be lie flat seating, so at minimum I’m looking at business class. I’m only looking at 1-way to Ghana as I will be flying back to the states on Emirates no matter what.

Out of all the options, I’ve narrowed down my choices to 4 different airlines. They are Delta, South African Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines and Emirates. Here is a comparison of the routes, the cost, the cost using mileage currency and any notes.

Which route do you think I should take?
